In 1645 Jeanne Mance founded the first hospital in Montreal, the Hôtel Dieu, which was previously located in Old Montreal on the rue des Brésoles. In 1721 a fire destroyed the hospital for the third time. If the king again agrees to help with the reconstruction, it takes at least ten years to complete the work. In 1861, the sisters made the decision to leave the neighborhood made too noisy, animated and unhealthy for their patients and moved on the Avenue des Pins, in the countryside, far from the city. On the grounds of their former hospital, the St Joseph sisters hired a set of warehouses that they rented to different importers. At the end of the 20th century, the sisters sold all their warehouses and these were converted into condominiums by architect Claude Gagnon. This large-scale project led to the transformation of Old Montreal into a residential area. Cours le Royer has now has 55 apartments spread over 4 floors and all separated by a pedestrian crossing.
